This book grabs you in the first few pages and once you start reading it you will be hooked. I loved it!
A fun read from a Hong Kong insider. This tale of expats in Asia will ring true with those who have lived in, or travelled to the city. The plot is interesting too, with strong characters. Highly recommended!
Coco Richter has written a spell-binding story about an expat couple in Hong Kong. She brings Hong Kong to life in her pages, and her characters are deep and sympathetic, even as their relationship unravels. I read this book on a family vacation and couldn't wait to get some time to myself to finish the story. It reminded me of early 1990s Clara Law films. I can't wait to read more from Richter.
My heart is still racing from the intensity of this novel. I was immediately drawn in to this young woman's journey to Hong Kong. There is so much vibrancy and descriptive language in Coco Richter's writing - you are transported to the heart of this bustling city and feel as if you are right beside the protagonist the entire time, experiencing her thrilling and at times terrifying adventure together. What a fantastic first novel from Coco Richter! I hope we will see more from her soon.
At first I thought this might be another Hong Kong expatriate story; a playground for the wealthy where morals are loosely defined and cultural references are superficial, if present at all, but this was decidedly not that story. This completely unique and haunting tale sucks in the reader on a breathless ride to see what becomes of our tortured heroine. Her dreams are brutal and her suffering, entirely believable and wrenching. The author clearly knows her way around Hong Kong, far beyond the Peak and the Star Ferry. Reading it on kindle, I was distraught to see the book suddenly finished. I kept swiping, hoping for more!
Enjoyed the insight into X pat life in Hong Kong mixed with a tinge of mystery made for enjoyable reading.
Highly recommend this well written book. I didn't want to put it down and was sad when it came to an end.
