This is the story of a world-famous 50-year-old jewel box playhouse set on the water in Palm Beach, Florida, and today's furious attempts by Patrick Henry Flynn, actor Christopher Plummer, and others to save this national treasure.
Tossed in for added excitement are an owner who danced to international fame in the early 1900s, later becoming a federal agent hunting liquor smugglers; a famous Florida architect who loved designing glorious mansions and estates; a director who starred in Oklahoma! in the 1940s and went on to build a highly popular Tennessee theater; and a noted muralist trained in World War I France who created a striking 45-foot-long masterpiece for the ceiling.
Magically bringing history back to life are 340 illustrations, 21 of them in color. The result is a riveting saga of American theater history, raw courage by a few patient dreamers, glittering Palm Beach society of the 1960s and 1970s, and a noble but bitter preservation fight to save America's perfect town. This book is being published hopefully to celebrate the reopening of the widely treasured Royal Poinciana Playhouse, as a reminder of what was and could be once again.
Writes Palm Beach Theater Guild President Patrick Henry Flynn, "If the present owners succeed in their demolition-by-neglect of this theater, this book will serve a dual purpose. It will not only justly condemn the theater's neglectful owners to infamy, but also continually remind Palm Beach and Palm Beach County of a cultural, social, community, artistic and architectural treasure either lost on account of a failure of public will-or gained by public resolve.

"Thomas C. Clarie's book is wonderful! It tells the remarkable history of the Royal Poinciana Playhouse in such a way that any reader will not only appreciate the vast research, the abundance of celebrity photographs and theatre chit chat, but will find themselves acutely aware that this endangered Palm Beach treasure must survive." - Douglas Rae
This is an immensely valuable resource about the social, cultural and architectural history of not only Palm Beach but of South Florida as well. I have deposited the book in the Florida Collection of the State Library of Florida, where it can be cared for and made available to others. Thank you for your impressive work in recording this important aspect of Florida's history. -- Barbara E. Mattick, PhD, Chief, Bureau of Historic Preservation
Royal Poinciana Playhouse History Filled With Nostalgia
by Scott Eyman, Palm Beach Post reviewer, Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010
Memories for the Future is a very readable and nicely produced history of the Royal Poinciana Playhouse in Palm Beach. The Poinciana has been the subject of ongoing tugs of war between developers who want to raze it and preservationists who want to save the place that closed its doors in 2003. Thomas Clarie's book is essentially a year-by-year, decade-by-decade history of the theater and, therefore, a large part of Palm Beach as well. The theater's programming never really changed big, slightly past-their-prime stars in vehicles - Private Lives starring Richard Kiley and Tammy Grimes; The Front Page with Ray Milland; Dial M For Murder with Joan Fontaine and Jeffrey Lynn. There were some exceptions - Othello, with James Earl Jones and Christopher Plummer, Barrymore with Plummer again, but not many. Winter stock, as it were. The audience and the actors both began to die off around the same time, and the theater could never find a market again. Clarie's book is chock full of nostalgic photos, reviews and history of the theater's changing managements. It's a valuable piece of Palm Beach history.
I would like to be a part of the leadership to see the Royal Poinciana Playhouse reopen. Knowing the RPP history and the players on stage and behind the scenes helps put together a game plan for that goal. Woodie Thomas
Bought it as a Christmas gift for a friend who once performed there
